You should use wire frame if you need any special shape and attach the material on it with PVA.
If you want the smoke to be more solid, you can also mix it with PVA.
You must use an airbrush or spray to paint it. The spray will add rigidity and fix the shape.
Start with black and grey, and then use red, orange, or yellow - the fire can be really different. You can see different colour ideas on the photos here. The main point is to make the colour brighter as it gets closer to the centre of explosion.
If you have LED lights with batteries, you can put them into the base of the cloud. In this case you don't need to paint it red and yellod - the light will perfectly imitate fire.
